Monarch 4-H Food Forest

In the beginning.

The Monarch Food Forest began in October 2019 on a vacant lot nextdoor to “The Mansion”, our 4-H meeting location. The owners let us build a garden on their property.
We started by clearing tons of rubbish, trash, and other items evident from a demolished home site. Then we ordered several truckloads of tree mulch.
We started by laying out garden beds in a 4-H shamrock design for the kitchen garden behind "the Mansion, our 4-H meeting location.
We spread cardboard and drew a shamrock shape with bricks, adding soil we purchased to fill in the design.
At the same time, we contacted the owners of the vacant lot next door and asked if we could use the land for a garden. They agreed and we started the Monarch Food Forest. After removing lots of debris, we covered it with a thick layer of mulch.
We extended the shamrock design to the entire garden and laid out the design with coconuts, since we had a lot available. (This was a big mistake!)
We received a donation of banana pups from our friend Jeff.
Elaine and her daughters did a lot of work to lay out the design.
We planted surinam spinach as a food forest staple.
Our 4-H club celebrated a maturing garden. Zoe painted the sign.
Monarch butterfly on rosemary.
