Spanish Needle (scientific name Bidens Alba), also called Beggarticks, is a controversial choice for plant of the week because of its characterization as a pesky weed and also some debate as to how “native” it really is.

Nevertheless, it blooms abundantly year round, providing a reliable nectar source for butterflies and bees. Leave bidens growing on the edges of pathways to feed the insects in your environment. Also good for erosion control.

Nutritional & Culinary Uses

Nutrient-Dense young leaves are packed with iron, calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C, rivaling kale. Edible tender leaves can be eaten raw in salads or cooked like other greens; flower petals add a bite to salads.

Medicinal Properties (Traditional & Studied)

Antimicrobial properties fight bacteria (like MRSA) and fungi, used for infections in respiratory, urinary, and gastrointestinal systems. Anti-inflammatory properties help reduce inflammation, useful for sore throats, joint pain, and ulcers. Teas made from leaves provide immune support that help ease cold and flu symptoms. Plant compounds may also fight malaria parasites. May also have anti-ulcer and gut-soothing properties that fight dysentery.

How to make a tincture: crush leaves and stems (not flowers) picked in the morning, rinse and cover with strong alcohol (everclear) in a jar, store in darkened location, stir daily for 2 weeks, strain and bottle. Use as an anti-viral 20-30 drops in water.
